Derek and Dad - 1st trip out of Intensive Care
Dear Hockey Community;
As you may know, Derek Zike, a ‘92 player with the Chicago Fury hockey team was seriously injured in a tournament game in Ann Arbor, MI on January 16th. During the game Derek attempted to make a turn and lost the edge of his skate, fell and crashed head-first into the boards at a high rate of speed. It happened so quickly that Derek was unable to brace himself for impact. Derek was not hit by anyone; it was quite simply the result of a lost edge while trying to turn.
Derek’s was seriously injured when he hit the boards. He sustained a burst fracture of the 5th cervical vertebrae, which in simple terms is a broken neck. Derek has been recovering in the intensive care unit at C.S.Mott Childrens Hospital in Ann Arbor MI since the accident.
The hockey community has shown an unbelievable capacity to come together to help one of its own. A bunch of us are rallying support for Derek and his family, they could certainly use your support and prayers.
Lastly, Derek and his family are great people and truly representative of the hockey community at large. On behalf of the Zike family, please take the time to enjoy your family and children and take no moments for granted.
Thank you for your thoughts and concerns and please keep your prayers coming.
