From the ‘97 Rebels

February 24th, 2009

Another part of the hockey community steps up!  Here’s their letter to the Zikes.
——————————————

Mr. Zike,

I recently read about your son Derek and the severity of his injury and may God be with you and your family.  I received your email from Joanne Gerstner at the Detroit News.  My son plays on the 97 Rebels Pee Wee Travel team out of Brighton, MI.  I forwarded the article to the families on our team and the response was overwhelming that we need to do something to help this family.

Yesterday, Sunday, February 22nd, our boys did a can drive around their neighborhoods to try and raise funds for your family to use as you see fit.  After we collected the returnables we met up at Meijer to cash in.   We don’t want to grandstand and/or intrude on your personal situation.  I would like to know how we can get a check to you and who we can make it out to.  We still have three families that I need to collect from that couldn’t make it yesterday because of prior commitments, but as of right now we over $800.00 for you.  I should have everything buttoned up by Friday or Saturday.  The outpouring to help was unbelievable.  The boys went around the neighborhoods on Thursday and put flyers in peoples mailboxes.  We had a donation of $250.00 and $25.00 from complete strangers offering to help.  I’ve attached that flyer for you if you care to see it.

If you are so inclined we have two of our coaches are ex U-M and NHL players and are in the Ann Arbor quite a bit and have expressed their desire to deliver the check to you and your wife if that is ok with you.  If not we understand.

This is something we wanted to do, so please don’t say you won’t take it because its coming your way one way or another.  I hope your son get better, I just can’t imagine what you and your wife are going through.

God Bless and our prayers are with you,

Mike Toth
